Lover's Leap, Elkader
Lover's Leap in Elkader, Iowa, is a natural overlook with a legendary haunting, not associated with a specific bridge. The legend tells of White Cloud, a Native American maiden who, unable to find her love Lou after he was captured and ordered to leap from the cliff, leaped into the Turkey River herself in grief, leading to claims of moans or apparitions in the area. This differs from the "Lover's Leap" in Columbus Junction, Iowa, which is a swinging bridge associated with a similar legend but features a maiden's spirit and different details. White Cloud, the daughter of Chief Grey Eagle, and Lou, the son of the Millville family. Lou followed braves to learn about a lead mine, was captured, and ordered to leap from the cliff. He fought his captors and was presumed to have survived, lying on the cliff. White Cloud followed him in her canoe, discovered him, and, unable to bear the presumed loss, removed her moccasins and leaped over the cliff herself. While the legend doesn't detail specific paranormal activity, some visitors claim to hear moans or see apparitions in the area, particularly on the anniversary of White Cloud's death.
