Friley Hall at Iowa State University has several ghost stories, including the tale of a supposedly haunted room that is permanently locked and a story about the ghost of a longtime janitor named "Mr. Bigg" who roams the winding halls. The origin of the permanently locked room story was later explained to be due to a lack of a fire escape, not supernatural reasons. A room in Friley Hall was rumored to be avoided because residents would disappear or die. The room was described as having bleeding walls, fire, and sightings of a man in a black suit and top hat. However, this tale was later debunked by a university official who stated the real reason for avoiding the room was a lack of a fire escape. Another story claims that the ghost of a long-serving janitor, known as "Mr. Bigg," still haunts the residence hall's hallways. Some students claim they can still see him in the winding halls of Friley.
