Whispers Estate, Mitchell
Whispers Estate in Mitchell, Indiana, is a historic Victorian mansion built in 1894 that is known for intense paranormal activity, including disembodied voices, unexplained sounds like footsteps and banging, physical touches such as scratches, and visual apparitions like shadowy figures and a child in a white dress. The haunting is attributed to the many deaths that occurred in the house, particularly the Gibbons family, and the former residents like Dr. John Gibbons and his patients. After purchasing the estate in 1899, the Gibbons family experienced tragedy, including the death of their adopted daughter, Rachael, from severe burns after starting a fire in the parlor. Dr. Gibbons ran a medical practice on the first floor for 26 years, leading to the presence of spirits from his patients or victims. The house also saw a father die in 1966 and his son in 1974. Visitors report hearing whispers in their ears (giving the house its name), disembodied voices, footsteps, and knocking or banging sounds. Guests have experienced being scratched, grabbed by invisible hands, and feeling the sensation of a child hugging their arm. Eyewitnesses have seen shadow figures, including a human-shaped figure with a goat's face, and a little girl in a white dress. Doors have been seen opening and closing, beds and couches have shaken violently, and objects have moved on their own. In addition to sounds and sights, visitors have reported smelling unpleasant odors like dirty bandages or tobacco, and feeling sudden rushes of cold air or pins and needles on their skin.
