Okie Pinokie is a densely wooded area near Peru, Indiana, widely known for its unsettling atmosphere and various ghostly legends. It is located off of River Road near the Mississinewa Reservoir, with a specific, circular gravel turnaround called "Devil's Circle," which is believed to be a central point of paranormal activity. One story suggests the area is a former Native American burial ground, where a tribe was massacred during the War of 1812. Visitors have reported seeing the ghost of a Native American woman suddenly appear and then vanish as they drive. A story from 1976 claims a young man named Joey Peoria disappeared while camping in the woods with friends. Following an argument, the other men camping with Joey were brutally murdered and found nearby. Joey was never seen again. Some believe his evil spirit now haunts the woods, or that a British soldier's spirit intervened to stop his killing spree. Ghostly voices of a man calling for help are sometimes attributed to Joey. Visitors report hearing a little girl's tormented screams in the woods. Some have connected the screams to a seven-year-old girl named Stephanie, but the Miami County Historical Society has stated this story is a myth. Other reports suggest the screaming is real but not connected to a specific ghost, or it could be pranksters using smartphones. Visitors frequently report a noticeable drop in temperature and an unsettling feeling of being watched when near "The Devil's Circle". Paranormal encounters include unexplained footsteps, rocks being thrown, and electronic malfunctions affecting cameras and phones. Some people have even reported strange physical symptoms, such as sudden and inexplicable sickness, after visiting the area.
