Ashmore Estates, Ashmore
Ashmore Estates is described as a historically significant and heavily haunted location in Ashmore, Illinois, known for its past as a poor farm and later as a commercial haunt house, with reports of apparitions, ghostly voices, phantom footsteps, and alleged paranormal attacks on visitors. Specific alleged hauntings include the spirit of Elva Skinner, who died in a fire, and other dark entities, as well as the spirit of a man believed to have been killed by a train. The building, originally built in 1916, has a history of abandonment and damage, including extensive damage from a violent windstorm in 2013, and is currently under renovation. Reports include the presence of apparitions and unexplained voices. Visitors have reported hearing phantom footsteps and other unexplainable sounds. Some accounts mention darker, more malevolent entities attacking those who visit the property. Alleged Ghosts: Elva Skinner: One of the patients who died in a fire at the facility is said to haunt the grounds. The spirit of a man believed to have been struck by a speeding train is also reported to stalk the hallways and grounds. The laughter of a little girl who burned to death is said to echo through the empty rooms. A paranormal photograph was reportedly taken by Trent Jefferies, showing what people believe to be a nurse who worked at the asylum. The building was originally built in 1916 and served as the Coles County Poor Farm until 1959. After closing, it was abandoned for many years before reopening as a commercial haunt house in 2006.
