St. James Cemetery, Lemont
St. James Cemetery (Monks Castle) in Lemont, Illinois, is considered a haunted location known for sightings of robed monks wandering the grounds, a phantom horse and carriage, and a woman in white who disappears. One legend involves the 1897 discovery of Native American skeletons on the property, while other reports include the ground appearing to breathe and hooded figures vanishing. A 1977 police officer saw monk-like figures, which disappeared when pursued. Some visitors have reported seeing hooded figures resembling monks in robed attire, as well as hearing Latin chanting. A phantom horse-drawn carriage, presumed to be from around 1897, is said to appear in the cemetery. A figure of a woman in a white dress has also been spotted in the cemetery and near a building at the bottom of the bluff. A Cook County police officer reported seeing monk-like figures that vanished when he approached them. In late December 1897, scientists discovered several hundred-year-old skeletons, including one over seven feet tall, on the grounds.
