Southern Illinois University, Carbondale
Southern Illinois University (SIU) in Carbondale is rumored to be one of the most haunted campuses in Illinois, with ghost stories and strange occurrences reported in several buildings. Shryock Auditorium: Named for Henry William Shryock, the university's fifth president, the auditorium is supposedly haunted by his spirit. Shryock died suddenly in the building in 1935, and his ghost is blamed for the stage lights inexplicably turning on and off. Students have also reported seeing an apparition on stage resembling a "Phantom of the Opera". Mae Smith Residence Hall: This dormitory is rumored to be haunted by the spirit of a former secretary who died on the job. Students and staff claim to have heard sounds of typing and file cabinet drawers opening by themselves. There are also reports of doors opening and closing on their own and shadowy figures. Faner Hall: As a large, confusing building, Faner Hall is the subject of a legend that a lost student's spirit still roams its halls. Students have reported hearing unexplained footsteps that echo and amplify, sometimes sounding like more than one person. Wheeler Hall: This historic building, which once housed the university's library, is said to be haunted by a spectral "little boy". This ghost is allegedly seen running through the halls and heard giggling.
