Schweppe Mansion, Lake Forest
The Schweppe Mansion in Lake Forest, Illinois is rumored to be haunted by the spirits of its former residents, Charles Schweppe, and his wife Laura, along with several servants. Charles Schweppe, the original owner, committed suicide in his bedroom in 1941, leaving behind a note that said, "I've been awake all night. It's terrible". His wife, Laura, also passed away in the mansion in 1937. The house was vacant for 46 years after Laura's death, and stories claim the spirits of the Schweppes and their servants remain on the property. In 1941, Charles Schweppe shot himself in his upstairs bedroom, with the note indicating his torment. His suicide is believed by some to be linked to business failures or the money situation after his wife's death. Stories say that the spirits of both Charles and Laura Schweppe, along with various servants, are still present in the mansion. In addition to the original owners, the halls of the mansion are said to be haunted by the spirits of the servants who worked there, according to this report from The Forest Scout. A caretaker of the estate once reported seeing a man in the backyard who he swore was Mr. Schweppe. The man was never seen again after that encounter.
