The Peoria State Hospital, also known as the Bartonville Asylum, is a site of numerous paranormal reports, including full-bodied apparitions, disembodied voices, sudden radio changes to religious and country music, and unexplained medicinal or strange noises. The former psychiatric hospital, which closed in 1973, is reportedly haunted, with activity concentrated in areas like the original Cottage B1. Today, the site is a location for ghost tours and is also home to Aura Haunted House, a haunted attraction held in the old hospital complex. Witnesses have reported seeing full-bodied apparitions and other shadowy figures. Sounds such as disembodied voices, laughter, and other strange noises have been frequently reported. Some visitors have noted the distinct smell of medicine or other unusual odors. There are reports of radios turning on by themselves and changing to religious and country music stations. Cottage B1: Located within the original cottage system designed by Dr. Zeller, this area is a hotbed for paranormal experiences.
