Residents of the adjacent mobile home park claimed to hear knocking and rapping sounds on their doors and windows when no one was there. They also reported hearing sounds of moaning and crying from the crash site. One witness reported seeing a man near the crash site who smelled of gasoline and appeared to be smoldering. The figure then vanished into the darkness. Dogs in the mobile home park would bark endlessly at the empty field, providing no clear explanation for their erratic behavior. On May 25, 1979, American Airlines Flight 191, a DC-10, crashed shortly after takeoff from Chicago O'Hare International Airport. The left engine detached from the wing, causing the plane to lose control and crash into a field. The crash resulted in the deaths of all 258 passengers and 13 crew members, as well as two individuals on the ground.
