Lincoln Square Theatre, Decatur
The Lincoln Square Theatre in Decatur, Illinois, is widely considered one of the most haunted places in America, with reports of paranormal activity dating back to the 1940s. The theater was built in 1916 on the site of the former Priest Hotel, which had been destroyed by fire. This tragic history is often cited as the source of its lingering ghostly energy. The most well-known spirit is "Red," a friendly former stagehand who died in 1927 after taking a nap on stage and never waking up. Visitors and staff have reported hearing his whispers and seeing his shadowy figure near the stage area. An additional stagehand spirit is said to haunt the building. This ghost reportedly fell to his death from a catwalk above the stage and can be seen roaming the theater. A female spirit has also been reported in the theater, seen as a figure in white. The building's history, constructed on the site of the former Priest Hotel, suggests that spirits of people who died in the hotel fire may linger. Dark, shadowy figures have been seen walking in the hallways, especially in the basement. Reports include unexplained moving seats and other objects throughout the theater. One YouTube video mentions turning around to find nobody in a seat that a phantom "kid" was kicking. The sounds of footsteps are often heard in the auditorium, on the stage, and in the basement. Guests have reported getting their hair pulled or being tapped on the shoulder by an unseen presence. The theater has a very haunted spiral staircase on the stage. Coins have also been reported to drop from the ceiling, seemingly from nowhere.
