Death Curve, Cambridge
The "Death Curve" near Cambridge, Illinois, is haunted by the ghost of Julia Markham, who murdered her seven children there in 1905. Locals report seeing her spirit, often described as a woman in a white gown, gliding across the fields near the curve on quiet nights. On September 30, 1905, Julia Markham killed her seven children with an axe at their rural home on Timber Ridge Road, an area now known as Death Curve. The children were murdered while her husband was away. She then set the house on fire in an attempted murder-suicide. Though she initially survived, Julia Markham later died from her injuries. In a letter to her husband, she reportedly confessed her motive was to save her children from unhappiness. The horrific crime scene has become the focal point of the haunting, with many locals claiming to have seen paranormal activity in the area over the decades. The most common account is seeing a translucent, glowing image of a woman in a white, flowing gown moving through the nearby fields. Some believe her spirit is searching for her children. Ghostly lights have also been reported in the area, particularly along the stretch of road now known as Death Curve. Local legend suggests Julia Markham's spirit is more likely to appear around the date of the original tragedy, September 25th, as stated by a former Henry County sheriff.
