George Stickney House, Bull Valley
The George Stickney House in Bull Valley, Illinois, is described as haunted due to its unique architecture and a legend about its builder. Built by Spiritualists George and Sylvia Stickney in the mid-1800s, the house was intentionally constructed with no 90-degree corners to allow spirits to flow freely through the home. A local legend claims George Stickney was found dead in a rare, accidental 90-degree corner of the house, leading to the belief his spirit is now trapped there. Today, police officers have reported paranormal activity, including disembodied footsteps, flushing toilets, and turning lights and doorknobs. The house was built in the mid-1800s by the Stickneys, who were believers in Spiritualism and believed spirits could communicate with the living. To facilitate the movement of spirits and prevent them from getting "snagged" in corners, the house was designed with rounded walls and no right angles. Despite the careful design, the house reportedly contained a single, accidental 90-degree corner. A local legend states that George Stickney died in this corner, with a look of terror on his face. Some believe his spirit is now trapped in that corner. The house is now occupied by the Bull Valley Police Department. Police officers working in the building have reported hearing unexplained phenomena such as: Footsteps on the second floor, Toilets flushing on their own, Lights turning off, Doors opening and doorknobs turning, and Voices heard from nowhere.
