Ax-Man's Bridge in Crete, Illinois, is rumored to be haunted by a murderer who killed his family, two police officers, and then himself with an ax, though reports of actual murders at the location are unsubstantiated. Visitors to the bridge and nearby woods report experiencing phenomena such as hearing screams and whispers, seeing shadowy figures or lights, and feeling a general sense of unease, but a local news article and other sources suggest the "Ax-Man" story is a fictional tale concocted by local teenagers. The Legend: The story claims that in the 1970s, an Ax-Man murdered his wife, children, and two responding police officers with an ax. He then allegedly hung their bodies in his shed and was shot to death by police near the old metal bridge. The house where the murders occurred is no longer standing. Visitors report hearing children screaming or laughing, seeing a crying woman, and witnessing strange lights in the woods. Some claim to hear the sound of someone running or even the distinct sound of heavy breathing near the bridge. Despite the popular legend, a Chicago Tribune article states there were no actual murders at Ax-Man's Bridge.
