The ghostly legends of the Bulgarian Monk of Yankee Fork describe sightings of a black-robed figure who paces the banks of the Yankee Fork river holding a lantern. The sightings began after his mysterious death by drowning in the 1890s, when contradictory reports left his fate in doubt. The ghost is said to haunt the areas of the abandoned mining camps of Bayhorse and Bonanza, near Challis, Idaho, and always disappears as soon as someone approaches. The ghost story stems from the strange life and death of a historical figure, Rev. A. N. Experidon, an eccentric Orthodox hieromonk who traveled across the United States in the late 1800s. He earned the moniker "The Bulgarian Monk" while living in Idaho. According to the local folklore, the monk's life ended mysteriously when he was reported to have drowned. The circumstances surrounding his death were complicated by two conflicting accounts: A witness claimed to have seen the monk drown in the Yankee Fork river. Two weeks later, a visitor to the area claimed to have seen the monk alive, playing with children 25 miles away on the very day he was said to have drowned.
