Spirit Lake, Spirit Lake
Spirit Lake (Kaniskee) is considered haunted by the ghost of a young Indigenous woman, often described as a girl with long black hair in a white dress, who drowned herself or was taken into the lake by her lover, with no bodies ever being found, according to Idaho Haunted Houses and Kootenai County. The local Indigenous people, the Coeur d'Alene tribe, believed her spirit was carried away by something they called "tesemini". A ghostly girl, often described as having long black hair and wearing a white dress, is said to linger at the lake. The Origin of the Legend: One version suggests she was a Coeur d'Alene girl who drowned herself out of grief after her lover was killed in a tribal fight. Another version states that the chief's daughter eloped with a young brave, and out of fear of being separated by her pursuing father, the brave took her into his arms and they both jumped into the lake. In either story, the pair's bodies were never recovered. The tribe believed that "tesemini" carried them away, contributing to the lake's name and its haunting legend.
