Fish Woman of Lake Couer D'Alene, Coeur d'Alene
The haunted legend of the Fish Woman of Lake Coeur d'Alene is a "water mystery" with various accounts describing unexplained paranormal phenomena attributed to her. Different versions of the tale paint her either as a fish-like apparition or a vengeful, horned creature. Some stories describe a ghostly "fish-woman" seen around the lake. In one legend from a different area but similarly involving a fish woman, a young woman's skin shimmers like silver scales after a river beast swallows and then releases her, suggesting a similar transformation in the Coeur d'Alene account. In another version of the legend, a large, horned monster is said to live in the lake and lift boats out of the water. The most vivid, though possibly conflated, accounts describe her as a tragic figure transformed into a monster. In addition to apparitions of the Fish Woman, paranormal occurrences related to her legend include: Strange sounds are reportedly heard around the lake. A sudden, unnerving wind is said to churn the lake's surface without a clear cause.
