Prince Waikiki is rumored to be haunted, with stories and sightings passed among employees and guests. The most famous alleged spirit is Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana'ole, a historical figure connected to the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy. The spirit of Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana'ole: Several guests have reported a polite, well-dressed, Hawaiian man in a period suit and hat joining them in the elevator. The man may even engage in conversation, but disappears before reaching his floor. One guest, after riding the elevator with the man, was so struck by the encounter that she asked the concierge about him. She immediately recognized the man's likeness in an old black-and-white portrait of Prince Jonah Kuhio Kalaniana'ole hanging behind the front desk. The prince was a statesman and a revolutionary who attempted to restore the Hawaiian monarchy after it was overthrown. He was imprisoned for his efforts but later became a Congressional delegate for Hawaii. His connection to the area is believed to be why his spirit lingers. Multiple employees have described seeing glowing blue, incandescent orbs of light moving down the hotel's upper-floor corridors. These orbs often travel together and pass straight through walls. These events are reportedly so frequent that some veteran staff have grown accustomed to them and simply pause their work to let the lights pass by. They are generally believed to be harmless. People have heard voices speaking in the Hawaiian language from seemingly empty corridors. Apparitions of long-dead guests have been known to appear near the hotel's pool, as if still enjoying their vacation.
