Morgan's Corner on Oahu, Hawai'i, is associated with the 1948 murder of Therese Wilder, a widow killed by two escaped prisoners, but its hauntings are more attributed to a widespread urban legend of a couple parked in a car where the boyfriend's hanging body is discovered, creating the sound of scratching on the roof. The urban legend of the couple is a separate, fictional story from the true events of the Wilder murder, though some believe the spirits of the victims or perpetrators may still linger at the former site of the Wilder estate, which is now a gated community. Murder of Therese Wilder: In 1948, a 68-year-old widow, Therese Wilder, was murdered in her home on the Morgan's Corner property. Two escaped prisoners, John Pakiko and James Majors, broke into her home, bound and gagged her, and suffocated her, motivated by a desire for food. They were captured, confessed, and sentenced, though their punishments were later reduced. The original house is gone, and the area is now a gated community.
