Berry College is known for several ghost stories, the most famous being the Green Lady, a misty figure seen on the campus roads. Other tales include the spirit of a former house mother, Ruth, the ghost of Martha Berry herself, and a student named Mary in the Mary Hall tower who reportedly died by suicide. There are also reports of a ghost horse named Rooney and spectral lights at the Roosevelt Cabin, all contributing to the campus's haunted reputation, earning it the nickname "Scary Berry". Key Hauntings at Berry College. The Green Lady: A disembodied green mist or fog, sometimes seen on Stretch Road, which connects the mountain and main campuses. Some reports describe her as a young woman with no eyes. Martha Berry's Spirit: The founder of Berry College is said to haunt Oak Hill, her former home, which is now a museum, and the Hoge Building. Mary Hall Ghost: A ghost of a female student, whose story is disputed, reportedly took her own life in a dorm tower after learning of her boyfriend's death in the war. Reports include hearing crying, feeling cold, and seeing the spirit, along with the tower's bell ringing at night. Rooney, the Ghost Horse: Martha Berry's horse, Rooney, is said to rise from his grave on Halloween and on Sunday mornings to ride with Martha Berry's spirit to Sunday school. Roosevelt Cabin Lights: A Berry employee saw a light on in the upstairs of the Roosevelt Cabin, even though no one was living there at the time. Drowned Girl: The spirit of a girl who drowned in a nearby creek in the 1930s is also rumored to haunt the college grounds.
