Panola Hall Eatonton
Panola Hall in Eatonton, Georgia, is said to be haunted by the spirit of a young woman named Sylvia, who has allegedly been active since the Civil War era. Descriptions of her paranormal activity suggest a shy but playful presence. Sylvia is most often described as a beautiful and shy young woman with dark hair, wearing a white skirt or a white, round-bottom dress. Some reports add that she has a delicate rose in her hair. She is frequently seen on the stairwell, in the second-floor hallway or bedroom, and occasionally smiling through a second-story window. Her presence is sometimes marked by the sweet, pleasant scent of a million roses. While shy, Sylvia's ghost is also known for playful and mischievous acts. Witnesses and legends report the following phenomena: Opening and closing drawers, moving furniture around, and smiling back at people from an upstairs window. According to one version of the legend, Sylvia was forced to marry a man she did not love. She planned to escape by climbing out of her window but reportedly fell into a trunk and was never seen again. Some stories suggest her spirit continues to welcome people into the historic home.
