The I-4 Dead Zone, Lake Monroe
The I-4 Dead Zone is a haunted section of Interstate 4 in Sanford, Florida, built over the graves of German immigrants who died during a yellow fever outbreak in St. Joseph's Colony in the late 1800s. The area is associated with numerous fatal accidents and unexplained phenomena, including radio interference, cellphone disruptions, and sightings of orbs and ghostly apparitions. The area was the site of a planned Roman Catholic community called St. Joseph's Colony, founded by Henry Sanford. In 1887, a severe yellow fever outbreak killed many of the arriving German settlers, including a family of three or four who were buried in a small cemetery on the property. The settlers never received their last rites, and the highway construction in 1959 was built directly over their graves, leading to the legend that the spirits are disturbed. The area has been the site of numerous deadly car accidents and is known for causing a high number of crashes. Drivers often report cell phones and GPS devices malfunctioning, while long-haul truck drivers experience constant static on their CB radios. Some claim to have seen ghostly apparitions or wispy balls of light near the road. There are reports of people hearing disembodied voices on their cell phones, or even seeing and interacting with hitchhiking apparitions who then vanish.
