The Koreshan State Historic Site in Estero is rumored to be haunted by the ghosts of its founder, Cyrus Teed, and his followers, who comprised a late 19th-century utopian cult. The unusual history of the Koreshan Unity and the strange fate of Teed's remains contribute to the eerie atmosphere of the park. A charismatic physician who, after a supposed electrocution, declared himself the messiah "Koresh." He developed a unique religion, Koreshanity, and led followers to Estero in 1894 to create a "New Jerusalem". The Koreshans believed that the Earth was a concave sphere and that they lived on the inside. They also followed principles of celibacy and communal living. Teed died in 1908, but his followers, believing he would be resurrected, placed his body in a bathtub and waited for his return. After several weeks, health officials intervened. Teed's body was eventually placed in a concrete tomb on a Fort Myers Beach property. In 1921, a hurricane washed the tomb out to sea, and his remains were never found. Visitors and paranormal enthusiasts believe the spirits of Teed and his devoted followers still watch over the land. Whispers, unexplained movements, and shadowy figures have been reported on the trails and within the buildings. Disembodied voices and footsteps have been heard by visitors and investigators. Professional investigators and paranormal podcasters have explored the site, documenting their encounters with the unexplained phenomena.
