The Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse has a reputation for being haunted, with reports of ghostly visitations and strange phenomena. The most famous ghost story involves a former lightkeeper whose aggressive spirit is said to remain in the basement. The most prominent ghost story associated with the lighthouse concerns Peter Rasmusen, one of the former lightkeepers. Visitors have reported feeling pinched, poked, and prodded, particularly men who sit in a certain chair in the basement of the lighthouse. The spirit is also said to dislike men wearing hats and has been known to knock them off. Some have experienced a burning sensation on their shoulders, trouble breathing, or the sensation of being dragged out of the chair. Beyond the specific story of Rasmusen, visitors have reported other spooky incidents over the years. Those climbing the 105 steps to the top of the tower have heard disembodied whispers and strange noises. Some people have also reported feeling a ghostly hand on their shoulder.
