Fort Delaware, on Pea Patch Island, is considered one of Delaware's most haunted locations due to its past as a Civil War prison camp where over 2,500 Confederate soldiers died under harsh conditions. Visitors and ghost hunters have reported numerous phenomena, including the apparitions of soldiers, disembodied voices and footsteps, unexplained cold spots, moving objects like ironing boards and rocking horses, and even ghostly figures of men, women, and children. The most prominent hauntings are associated with the Confederate soldiers imprisoned at the fort; around 2,400 to 3,000 died there. Visitors and staff have claimed to see soldiers watching them, shadowy figures, and specific figures such as a "Lady in Black" in the kitchen. Reports include cannon-like sounds, tapping windows, disembodied footsteps, and voices. Items like an ironing board and a rocking horse have been seen to move on their own. Cold spots and clouds of mist have been observed, with a rocking horse moving on its own. Areas like the Battery Torbert, the kitchen, the pantry, and beds have been reported as active sites for paranormal activity. A figure of a man and a full-figure shadow have been seen. A woman is reportedly seen by the stove, disliking men in the area, and can be "hit" with K2 meter responses. Visitors are encouraged to remain in the dark to potentially hear things or get K2 hits. The outline of a small child's body has been seen in a bed when no one was present. A person staying overnight reported hearing someone walking up the stairs and having their sleeping bag thrown across the room. Cloud-like mist has appeared in pictures taken near a lantern, and soldiers have been seen in photos by some.
