The Deer Park Tavern in Newark, Delaware, is rumored to be haunted, with ghost stories centered on its history as a former inn and a legendary curse by Edgar Allan Poe. The current building was constructed in 1851 after its predecessor, St. Patrick's Inn, burned down. The most famous legend claims that Edgar Allan Poe cursed the tavern's original location in 1843. Poe reportedly stayed at the St. Patrick's Inn while passing through Newark. After slipping in the mud outside, he is said to have angrily declared, "All who enter shall have to return". While an amusing curse for a business, some believe his restless spirit may be one of the resident ghosts. Doors, particularly the large front entrance, are said to swing open and close on their own. Guests and employees have reported strange sounds, such as disembodied noises coming from empty stairwells.
