The Bush-Holley House in Cos Cob is said to be haunted by a few different spirits, including the ghost of a young enslaved girl. The house's history as a former boarding house for artists and writers also contributes to its ghostly tales. The most persistent haunting story is of a young enslaved girl who lived in the home during the 18th century. The Bush family, who built the house, kept enslaved servants, and their living quarters were in the attic. According to local author and Bush-Holley House resident Anya Seton, the girl died of a contagious disease. Seton reportedly believed the girl's spirit remained on the property and would sometimes be heard screaming from the old wash house.
