Undercliff Sanatorium, Meriden

The Undercliff Sanatorium in Meriden, CT, was rumored to be haunted by spirits of former patients, with reports of disembodied voices, footsteps, apparitions, and unexplained lights and shadows. Visitors experienced the eerie sensation of invisible presences and the echoes of unseen children crying or laughing, leading some ghost hunters to capture Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVPs). Although the sanatorium was demolished in 2014, some believe its dark history and the trauma of its former patients continue to "linger" there. Whispers, screams, the laughter and crying of unseen children, and Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVPs) captured by investigators. Apparitions of deceased patients, strange shadows, inexplicable lights (red, orange, or blue) in rooms, and footprints that appear to have no source. A pervasive dark and oppressive feeling throughout the facility, even from the outside, and the sensation of walking alongside invisible entities. The Undercliff Sanatorium originally opened in 1910 as a hospital to treat patients with infectious diseases like tuberculosis and smallpox. It later functioned as a state hospital before its closure in 1976. After nearly 40 years of abandonment and decay, it was demolished in 2014, though the emotional residue and stories of the "ghost of Undercliff" are said to remain. The site was once on state property and had its grounds heavily patrolled, making it difficult for paranormal investigators to set up.
