Sheffield Island Lighthouse, Norwalk

Sheffield Island Lighthouse is associated with urban legends of ghosts and spirits, with reports of strange chanting music and a foghorn heard by an archeologist in the 1990s, though local trustee Mark Schlegel dismisses these claims. While one paranormal investigation in 2006 claimed to witness the ghost of a young girl named Abigail trapped by two quarreling adult ghosts, others remain skeptical. In the 1990s, an archeologist reported hearing strange chanting music and a foghorn while approaching the island by boat. In 2006, paranormal researchers claimed to have seen the ghost of a 7-year-old named Abigail on the second floor of the lighthouse, believing her to be trapped by two quarreling adult ghosts. Mark Schlegel, a trustee with 21 years of experience at the lighthouse, stated he had never encountered any ghosts and dismissed the paranormal researchers' claims. The Sheffield Island Lighthouse was built in 1826 to mark dangerous ledges in the Norwalk harbor. The island has a history of significant events, including the 1840 Lexington steamship fire and the death of Keeper Noah Mosher in 1872.
