Before the more serious encounters began, the family that owned the bar, the Ryders, experienced what they believed to be harmless but unsettling supernatural pranks. This included alarms going off, items being moved, and balls jumping off the pool table. Staff reported feeling sudden and extreme drops in temperature, particularly in the bar's basement. A family member saw three black shadows within the bar, which disappeared upon investigation. A psychic called in to help the family said there were two mischievous entities in the restaurant. This escalated into the owners dealing with a full-blown demonic force. According to the Ghosts of New England Research Society, a spectral image of a woman was reportedly captured at Ryder's. The Discovery Channel show A Haunting documented the Ryders' experience in a Season 5 episode called "The Uninvited".
