Old Windham Inn, Windham
The Old Windham Inn in Windham, Connecticut, is rumored to be haunted by the spirit of Elizabeth "Betsy" Shaw, a woman who was hanged for the murder of her child in the 18th century. Her ghost is often described as a woman in white, possibly looking for her child, and has been seen walking the grounds and even within the former inn, which is now an apartment building. In 1744, Betsy Shaw became pregnant out of wedlock and faced ostracism from the townspeople. When her baby was born and later found dead near a cliff, her father reported her to the authorities. Betsy was found guilty by an all-male jury and was hanged for the murder of her child. Her spirit is believed to be bound to the location, with reports of her appearing as a ghostly figure. Witnesses have seen a ghostly figure, often referred to as Betsy or the "White Lady" of Windham, on the property and in the surrounding area, particularly near the site of the gallows. She is often described as appearing to be searching for her deceased infant.
