The Nathan Hale Homestead is reportedly haunted by several phenomena, including disembodied voices, the figure of a man in a painting, and shadow figures, often accompanied by unexplained cold spots and moving objects like doors. A child reported a "mean man" from a painting shaking his finger at him, identified as John Hale, the father of Nathan. A servant girl named Lydia is also said to be seen on the back staircase, and a ghostly figure in white is seen sweeping floors. Visitors and staff have reported seeing shadows, a ghostly figure in a colonial-era outfit (sometimes identified as Deacon Hale), and even a servant girl named Lydia on the back staircase. Unexplained voices have been recorded, including one that said "Hi, hi," caught by a paranormal group in the attic. Reports include cold spots and hair being tugged. Doors opening and closing on their own have been observed. Unexplained Lights: People have seen a light, as from a candle or lantern, in the attic window late at night, though nothing is there to cause it. A child on a tour claimed a painting of John Hale (Nathan's father) shook its finger at him, leading some to identify his spirit as a source of activity.
