John York Home North, Stonington
The John York House, a historic home in North Stonington, Connecticut, is reputedly haunted by the ghosts of two men who died violently there. The property, which was built in 1741, served for over 250 years as an inn and tavern known as the "Pumpkin Inn" before being converted back into a private residence. The main haunted legend of the John York House involves a lovers' dispute that ended in a double homicide and suicide. The most famous ghost story associated with the house features two soldiers who were both in love with the same woman. The men got into a vicious fight over her, and one of them stabbed the other to death. Overcome with despair, the killer then fled outside and took his own life. It is said that the bloodstains from the murder were so persistent that the floorboards in that area had to be ripped up and replaced. The tragic history of the house has led to several reported ghostly occurrences attributed to the lingering spirits of the men. Visitors and residents have claimed to see a shadowy, male figure. Inexplicable drops in temperature have been reported inside the house. Strange and unsettling noises have been heard on the property.
