The Huguenot House, also known as the Makins Beemont House, in East Hartford is a haunted house associated with reports of paranormal activity including unexplained noises, sudden temperature changes, and visual phenomena. While not built by Huguenots, the historical home dating back to 1761 was the residence of the Makens Beemont family. Visitors and paranormal investigators have reported encounters with spectral figures, the sensation of being touched, and even phantom cigar smoke, suggesting the presence of lingering spirits within the building. People have reported hearing unexplained noises, a tug or pat on the back, and footsteps. Some visitors have seen translucent figures, particularly women in white or black and white gowns, walking through doorways and across rooms. Phantom cigar smoke has been smelled in the billiard room, a space associated with the cigar-smoking Mark Twain. The house was constructed in 1761 by Lieutenant Edmund Beamont and later purchased by Makins Beemont.
