The Harriet Beecher Stowe House in Hartford, Connecticut, is rumored to be haunted, with reports of mysterious noises, unexplained sights, and a recurring apparition. The paranormal interest of Stowe herself, who attended séances and was involved in Spiritualism, adds to the lore. The house has been featured on television's Ghost Hunters and hosts special "otherworldly" tours. The most common report is window shades opening on their own in the parlor, the very room where Stowe was laid out after her death. A full apparition has been sighted in the visitor's center. Another report describes seeing an image of a woman in a thick burgundy dress in the parlor, which disappears when the witness tries to look at her face. Unexplained footsteps have been heard all over the building. Witnesses have reported seeing sudden flashes of light emanating from the bedrooms. Some visitors experience a sense of anger or unease, particularly in the second-floor bedroom once shared by Stowe's adult twin daughters. During special tours, a K-2 meter used to track energy levels has reportedly lit up, indicating paranormal activity in the house. Following the loss of four of her seven children, Stowe attended séances and consulted with mediums to cope with her grief. The Gothic Revival home, where Stowe lived for 23 years, was the location of five deaths, including Stowe herself, who passed away in an upstairs bedroom in 1897.
