Fairfield State Hospital (later known as Fairfield Hills Hospital) in Newtown, Connecticut, is rumored to be haunted due to its troubled history of patient mistreatment and deaths. One paranormal investigator reported a male entity haunting the infirmary's second and third floors, and sensed a "really dark" presence, possibly from the trauma inflicted on patients who were reportedly chained to walls. Visitors to the abandoned hospital reported seeing shadowy figures in the attic and hearing disembodied voices and other noises in various buildings. Some believe the high levels of patient mistreatment, electroconvulsive therapy, and psychosurgery created a negative energy that continues to haunt the campus decades after it closed in 1995. The spirit of "Jane Householder": One ghost story tells of an elderly patient named Jane Householder who allegedly set a fire in the attic, only to be badly burned. Her ghost is said to still haunt the building, with slamming doors and the faint scent of lavender attributed to her. Opened in 1931 to house mentally ill patients, the institution has a well-documented past of harsh treatment and questionable practices that fueled rumors of haunting: Inhumane practices: Throughout its years of operation, the hospital performed lobotomies, electroshock therapy, and hydrotherapy. Mysterious deaths: Numerous patients died within the hospital from suicides and unexplained circumstances.
