The haunting story of Midnight Mary in New Haven's Evergreen Cemetery centers on Mary Hart, who was allegedly accidentally buried alive in 1872 after a deep swoon. Legend claims her relatives exhumed her body to find bloody scratches on her fingernails and the inside of her coffin, along with a startled expression, but there is no documentation to support this. The inscription on her tombstone, "THE PEOPLE SHALL BE TROUBLED AT MIDNIGHT AND PASS AWAY," is often seen as a curse from her traumatic death, leading to a belief that visiting her grave at midnight may bring a terrible fate. Mary Hart was reportedly buried alive in 1872, a common fear during that time. Following a vivid nightmare by Mary's aunt, the family had her body exhumed. Upon exhumation, it's said that the inside of the coffin was marked with scratch marks, and Mary's fingernails were bloody. Her gravestone bears the biblical phrase from the Book of Job, "THE PEOPLE SHALL BE TROUBLED AT MIDNIGHT AND PASS AWAY". The spirit of Midnight Mary is said to haunt the cemetery, and visitors who go to her grave at midnight may encounter her or suffer a terrible fate.
