Whaley House, San Diego
The Whaley House is considered one of the most haunted locations in America, with alleged paranormal activity including disembodied voices, mysterious sounds like footsteps and crying, the appearance of mists and apparitions, and objects moving on their own. Visitors and staff report experiencing a range of phenomena, such as unexplained temperature changes, the scent of perfume or cigar smoke, and equipment malfunctions. The haunting is attributed to several tragic deaths within the Whaley family and the property's history as a public execution ground, notably the hanging of Yankee Jim Robinson before the house was built. Guests have heard disembodied whispers, crying, giggling, heavy footsteps, and the sound of children running on the stairs. Mists and apparitions have been seen, including a figure looking from an upstairs window after the house closes. Phantom scents of lavender perfume and Thomas Whaley's cigar smoke are sometimes reported. Objects like crystals on lamps have been observed to swing, lights turn on and off, and curtains move. Some visitors report intense energy, tingling sensations, overwhelming sadness, or unexplained physical marks. The land the house is built on was a former public hanging site, where James "Yankee Jim" Robinson was hanged for stealing a boat in 1852. Several members of the Whaley family died tragically on the property, including: Thomas Whaley Jr.: Died as an infant. Violet Whaley: Shot herself in the heart in the backyard in 1885.
