Stokes Adobe (formerly Restaurant 1833 in Monterey) is rumored to be haunted by Dr. James Stokes, who took his own life in the building after using fraudulent medical supplies, and Hattie Gragg, a socialite who died in the adobe. Guests and staff have reported seeing a phantom figure in a white coat, and unexplained noises like sirens have occurred, potentially from Hattie's ghost or to scare away trespassers. The spirit of Dr. James Stokes, an early owner who committed suicide in 1864, is a prominent figure. Some accounts state he hanged himself from a chandelier. Witnesses have described seeing him as a restless, phantom figure draped in a white coat, sometimes seen moving through walls. The ghost of Hattie Gragg, a socialite who died in the adobe in 1948, is also reported to haunt the building. Unexplained events, such as a sudden siren, have been attributed to Hattie's spirit. Visitors have described seeing a phantom figure, believed to be Dr. Stokes, wandering the adobe. Loud, unexplained sounds have been heard, including siren-like blasts, which some believe are the spirits communicating. A deep sleep was interrupted by a noisy alarm that was later determined to be a security or fire alarm, but was found to be inside the building. Dr. James Stokes purchased the home four years after Tomlinson and lived there until his death by suicide. After being used as a home and a restaurant for celebrities, it was transformed into various restaurants, including Restaurant 1833, before becoming Stokes Adobe.
