The Los Coches Adobe is described as haunted by the ghost of a female brothel madam, along with victims of her murders, with reports including ghostly apparitions, screams from empty rooms and an old well, disembodied party noises, and even hand imprints on people's chests. The madam is said to have murdered miners for their gold by slitting their throats and discarding their bodies in the well on the property. The location's eerie atmosphere and history led to a 2015 investigation by the paranormal reality show Ghost Adventures. People report hearing screams from empty rooms or coming from the old well on the property. Sounds of loud parties and even stagecoaches have been heard emanating from the building at night. The most frequent sighting is a "Lady in Black," believed to be the spirit of the former brothel owner. Other sightings include shadows and figures in old western garb, and even the ghostly presence of the murdered miners trying to escape. Some witnesses have reported feeling a heavy, oppressive presence on their chest, like a hand pressing down, that leaves a handprint on their chest when they wake up. The old well is a significant focal point of the haunting, with screams heard from it and the madam's spirit sometimes seen pointing towards it. The adobe became a brothel and inn in the mid-1800s. The legend states that while guests slept, the madam would sneak into their rooms, slit their throats to steal their gold (especially from miners), and then dispose of their bodies in the on-site well. The adobe is currently fenced off and boarded up, though there are plans to restore it and turn it into a tourist attraction.
