Woodson Lateral Road Ghost Lights, Hensley
The haunted Woodson Lateral Road, near Hensley, Arkansas, is known for its mysterious ghost lights and the phantom hitchhiker. The tales are based on local lore of fatal motorcycle and car accidents in the area. Many witnesses have reported seeing the headlight of a motorcycle appear in the distance on the long, straight road. The light approaches, passes over the vehicle, and then a red taillight can be seen in the rearview mirror before it vanishes. The legend says the lights belong to a couple who died in a motorcycle crash on their way home from prom. Some visitors have reported seeing a more complex phenomenon. One person who brought binoculars described seeing a perfect, rotating, two-colored globe with smaller red lights hovering nearby. A former local once explained the lights as a combination of swamp gas and fog reflecting oncoming vehicle headlights. However, some have described the light as being too bright, real, and unexplainable for this to be the cause. A separate legend tells of a female hitchhiker who appears on stormy nights. Dressed in tattered clothes, she is said to have died in a car crash and is seeking a ride home. When a driver stops to offer her a ride, she gets in and gives an address in Woodson. She then vanishes from the vehicle just as the car pulls up to the destination. A variation of the tale says that when the driver later goes to the house, a parent answers and confirms that their daughter died years ago. In addition to the more famous legends, some have reported seeing shadowy figures peering from the trees and a giant owl that swoops at cars before vanishing.
