Monroe County Courthouse, Clarendon
The Monroe County Courthouse in Clarendon, Arkansas, is haunted by the spirit of Ernze Mabel Orr, also known as "Mabel". Mabel, a performing artist, was sentenced to hang after her husband, John Orr, was found shot to death under suspicious circumstances, though the sheriff reportedly gave her a morphine-laced poison instead of the original sentence. The courthouse itself is an old structure, dating back to 1911, making it a historic site with a chilling tale. The Legend of Mabel Orr: Mabel and her husband, John, were part of a comedy and opera duo. John had a notorious temper and frequently abused Mabel. Mabel and four slaves plotted to murder John by shooting him. John was found shot to death, and Mabel and the servants were sentenced to be hanged. The local sheriff, feeling sympathy for Mabel, allegedly provided her with a poisoned drink, containing morphine, to end her life before she was to be hanged. Mabel's tragic story has led to the belief that her spirit, and perhaps those of her co-conspirators, still linger within the courthouse walls, making it a haunted location.
