King Opera House, Van Buren
The King Opera House in Van Buren, Arkansas is believed to be haunted by the ghost of actor Charles Tolson, who was shot and killed on the premises in 1903 by the father of a young woman who wanted to elope with him. Visitors and staff have reported unexplained phenomena, including disembodied sounds, apparitions in period clothing, and a general feeling of a spectral presence. Charles Tolson was the owner of the Tolson Stock Company. In 1903, a local physician, Dr. Parchman, shot Tolson on the opera house's stage. Parchman reportedly suspected Tolson of bad intentions with his 17-year-old daughter, Allye Parchman, who wanted to join Tolson's acting troupe. Tolson's spirit is said to remain, forever performing from beyond the grave. People have claimed to see the ghost of an actor, sometimes described as wearing period clothing from the early 20th century. Reports include the sounds of things falling or dropping, even when nothing has fallen, and other general creepy feelings within the building. Some visitors report a tangible feeling of another presence within the historic structure. The theater was built in 1891 and originally served as a venue for traveling acting troupes. The building is still in use and accessible to the public. The opera house's alleged paranormal activity has been explored in paranormal documentaries, such as one by Gavin Webb on Apple Podcasts and Amazon.
