Williams Air Force Base (now Mesa Gateway Airport) is described as haunted by phantom figures, particularly on the west side of the base, and the former hospital is mentioned as a location for supernatural activity. The base, which operated from 1941 to 1993, served as a major pilot training facility, and some reports suggest its former existence is marked by apparitions of past personnel. Reports from Arizona Haunted Houses mention sightings of wandering, shadowy figures on the west side of the former air base. The former Williams Air Force Base Hospital has been identified as a site with reported paranormal phenomena. The base, like many abandoned military sites, is said to be haunted by the spirits of soldiers from its active years, according to Arizona Haunted Houses. From its establishment in the early 1940s until its closure in 1993, Williams Air Force Base was a leading pilot training center for the U.S. Air Force. The base was closed as part of a base realignment and closure (BRAC) process and has since been annexed by the city of Mesa, becoming the civilian Mesa Gateway Airport.
