Buckner Building, Whittier
The Buckner Building in Whittier, Alaska, is considered one of Alaska's most haunted places, with stories of unexplained noises and apparitions linked to its crumbling structure. Constructed in 1953 as a military barracks, it was abandoned after a devastating earthquake in 1964, leaving it to decay and become a haven for paranormal reports. Ghost hunters and explorers have reported recording electronic voice phenomena (EVP) inside the building. One YouTube video, filmed by an explorer entering the abandoned structure, allegedly captured "otherworldly sounds" that have been interpreted as paranormal. Reports exist of shadowy figures being seen in the dark, dilapidated hallways and other parts of the building. Visitors and podcast accounts describe hearing unexplained footsteps, disembodied voices, and other strange noises echoing through the decaying structure. Even without any specific ghost sightings, the Buckner Building's appearance alone is enough to inspire dread. The interior is described as a "feast of beautiful chaotic disintegration," with peeling paint, debris, and rusted equipment creating a deeply unsettling environment. Some areas, such as the former prison in the basement, are often flooded with murky water, adding to the creepy atmosphere. The building's large, dark hallways stretch into the distance, creating a feeling of unease and isolation. The constant cycle of freezing and thawing and the missing windows and doors have allowed the elements to take over, making the place feel truly haunted by its past.
