Red Onion Saloon, Skagway
The Red Onion Saloon in Skagway, a former Klondike Gold Rush brothel and saloon, is considered one of Alaska's most haunted locations, with famous spirits including Lydia, a woman who may have committed suicide and is said to linger there. Visitors and staff report eerie encounters, such as unexplained footsteps and feelings of presence, and even paranormal investigators have documented phenomena like mysterious noises and EVPs (Electronic Voice Phenomena). The spirits of the past are believed by some to be trying to tell their stories, including a woman referred to as the "Smelly Man". The most famous ghost, Lydia was a prostitute and sex worker who is believed to have committed suicide and whose presence can be felt through mysterious footsteps and even fan mail left for her. Another famous ghost of the Red Onion, though his story is less detailed, and his presence is also felt. Paranormal investigations have captured unusual noises, such as loud bangs and inexplicable EVPs that seem to speak about the ghosts' pasts, including one that says, "She made grave mistakes". Some report feeling a presence, smelling Lydia's lingering perfume, and experiencing unseen forces, such as someone pulling a bed away. There have been sightings of spirits and shadows, as well as the distinct sound of footsteps from the former brothel upstairs. The saloon retains its historic Gold Rush ambiance, with original furniture. The former brothel area now serves as a museum with guided stories about the women who worked there, including the famously haunted Lydia.
