Motherlode Lodge, Palmer
The Motherlode Lodge, a historic fixture in Alaska's Hatcher Pass near Palmer, was widely considered haunted before it was destroyed by fire in 2015. Multiple accounts described the lodge as "very active" with paranormal activity. The hauntings were attributed to its long history as a roadhouse, a bar, and a hotel serving miners. Many guests and staff reported seeing the apparition of a woman wandering the halls of the lodge. Paranormal disturbances in the bar area were attributed to a ghostly miner who would mess with bar supplies and equipment. On the night of the fire that destroyed the lodge in April 2015, multiple people reported seeing ghostly faces appear in the flames. The Motherlode Lodge was originally built in 1942 as the Little Susitna Roadhouse, serving miners and travelers on their way to the Independence Mine. According to local lore, the spirits of the miners would get you if you wandered too far from the lodge. Some anecdotal reports suggest there were tunnels beneath the lodge, possibly dating back to its mining-era use, which were associated with paranormal activity.
