The University of North Alabama (UNA) in Florence is steeped in history and folklore, with several of its historic buildings rumored to be haunted. The most prominent ghost stories involve restless spirits in Wesleyan Hall, Norton Auditorium, and the Robert M. Guillot University Center (GUC). One of UNA's most iconic buildings, Wesleyan Hall is said to have multiple ghostly residents. The Confederate Soldier's Son: A tragic, ambiguous past surrounds a ghost believed to be the son of a Confederate soldier. Jeremiah: Another legend describes the ghost of a boy named Jeremiah, who reportedly drowned in nearby Cypress Creek and now wanders the halls. Separately, another story describes a different drowned boy who is also seen wandering the halls. Norton Auditorium is reportedly haunted by a mischievous spirit named George, a construction worker who supposedly fell to his death from a scaffold during construction. He is known to cause strange noises and paranormal phenomena. George is described as a mischievous spirit who sometimes causes lights to malfunction. Eerie footsteps are often heard on the catwalk above the stage, attributed to George. A misty gray figure has been reported on the balcony of the George Lindsey Theatre, which is part of the auditorium. Robert M. Guillot University Center (GUC). This building is also home to a tragic spirit. The GUC is rumored to be haunted by a woman who is said to have hanged herself there. The sounds of her spirit are sometimes heard on the second floor. According to one ghost tour, the campus courtyard is where a former UNA treasurer met a grisly fate.
