Sturdivant Hall is said to be haunted by its second owner, John Parkman, who was shot and killed while attempting to escape prison for cotton speculation. Visitors to the Selma, Alabama mansion report phenomena like unexplained rocking chairs, self-opening and closing doors, phantom footsteps, unseen forces, and apparitions of two little girls. The haunting is associated with John Parkman, a banker who purchased the house in 1864. After the Civil War, he was arrested and imprisoned for cotton speculation and was killed attempting to escape. Parkman's ghost has been seen regularly throughout the house and on the grounds. Imprints of a body have reportedly been found on beds upstairs. A sudden rush of cold air can sweep through the house without explanation. A cloud of smoke has also been reported coming from an upstairs window.
