The Purifoy-Lipscomb Home is reportedly haunted by a spirit known as the "Crying Spirit at the Well," a tale popularized by Southern folklorist Kathryn Tucker Windham in her 1969 book, "13 Alabama Ghosts and Jeffrey". While the exact nature of the spirit and its story remains a local legend, there are accounts of a "presence" being sensed by some individuals during renovations of the c. 1840 home, which is located in Furman, Alabama. The Crying Spirit: The story centers on a well on the property where a spirit is said to cry for help. The story gained recognition through Windham's popular book, which featured it as one of the tales of ghosts in Alabama. The Wilcox Historical Society includes the home in its Tour of Homes and has noted local belief in the presence of the spirit. Some individuals who have worked on the home have reported sensing a "presence" within the house, particularly during renovations. The Purifoy-Lipscomb Home, built around 1840, is the documented location of the legend and is included in local historic tours.
